How Minor Eye Surgery Works

How Minor Eye Surgery Works

Minor ophthalmic surgery covers a range of procedures including chalazion (meibomian cyst) removal, eyelid lesion excision, and other small interventions. These are performed under local anaesthetic in our clean, CQC-rated clinic.

Your consultant will examine the area, discuss the best approach, and carry out the procedure with minimal discomfort. Stitches are rarely needed, and most patients experience rapid healing.

Am I Suitable?

Clinical minor surgery at our clinic covers a range of common eye conditions. You may be a candidate if you have:

An eyelid cyst (chalazion) that hasn't resolved on its own
A recurring stye or eyelid lump causing discomfort
A cosmetic concern related to your eyelids
A referral from your GP or optometrist for an eyelid procedure

Your consultant will confirm your suitability at your free consultation based on a thorough assessment of your eyes.

Understanding the Risks

Minor eye surgery is performed under local anaesthetic as an outpatient procedure. While complications are uncommon, your surgeon will explain:

  • Mild bruising or swelling around the treatment area — typically resolves within 1–2 weeks
  • Small risk of infection — minimised by our sterile technique and post-operative care instructions
  • Scarring is usually minimal, but depends on the type and location of the procedure
  • If tissue is sent for analysis (histology), results are typically available within 2–3 weeks
"I'd been living with a cyst on my eyelid for months. The procedure was quick and painless, and I wish I'd done it sooner."

Common Questions About Clinical Minor Surgery

Is the procedure painful?

The area is numbed with local anaesthetic before the procedure begins, so you won't feel pain. You may feel slight pressure, but most patients find it very manageable.

How long does the procedure take?

Most minor eye procedures take between 15-30 minutes. You'll be able to go home the same day.

Will there be scarring?

Our surgeons use precise techniques to minimise visible scarring. For eyelid procedures, any marks typically fade within a few weeks and are not noticeable.

How soon can I return to normal activities?

Most patients return to work and daily activities within 1-2 days. You should avoid strenuous exercise for about a week.

Do I need a GP referral?

A referral is not required for private patients. You can book a consultation directly with us, or your GP or optometrist can refer you.

When Can I Resume Normal Activities?

Activity Timeline
Driving Same day (if not patched)
Screen work Same day
Exercise 1 week
Swimming 2 weeks
Eye makeup 1 week
Face washing 24 hours (carefully)

Your Recovery Journey

Day 1
Procedure Complete

Most minor procedures take 15–30 minutes under local anaesthetic. You may have a small dressing or eye pad. Mild discomfort is normal and easily managed with over-the-counter painkillers.

Week 1
Healing Well

Any swelling or bruising begins to subside. If sutures were placed, they will dissolve naturally or be removed at your follow-up appointment.

Week 2–4
Returning to Normal

The treated area is healing fully. You can return to swimming, exercise, and makeup. Attend any scheduled follow-up appointments.

Month 1–3
Complete Healing

The area has fully healed. Any scarring is typically minimal and fades over time. If histology was taken, results will have been discussed with you.
