Cataract Care

See Colour, Contrast, and Life Again.

Cataracts gradually cloud your natural lens, making the world look faded and blurry. Modern cataract surgery replaces your clouded lens with a crystal-clear implant — restoring vivid, sharp vision.

Do Any of These Sound Familiar?

Colours seem faded or washed out compared to how they used to look
Night driving has become difficult due to glare and halos
Reading and close work are becoming increasingly harder
You feel like you're looking through a foggy window

How Cataract Surgery Works

How Cataract Surgery Works

During cataract surgery, your clouded natural lens is gently removed using ultrasound technology (phacoemulsification) and replaced with a clear artificial intraocular lens (IOL).

We offer a range of premium lens options including multifocal, toric, and extended depth-of-focus lenses — allowing you to reduce or eliminate your dependence on glasses after surgery.

Your Lens Options

During cataract surgery, your clouded natural lens is replaced with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). The lens you choose determines your visual outcome.

Monofocal Lens

Provides clear vision at one set distance — usually far. Most patients will still need reading glasses for close work.

Best for: Patients comfortable wearing reading glasses
Multifocal Lens

Designed to provide clear vision at multiple distances — near, intermediate, and far — reducing or eliminating the need for glasses entirely.

Best for: Patients wanting freedom from glasses at all distances
Toric Lens

Specifically designed to correct astigmatism alongside cataract removal. Available in monofocal and multifocal versions.

Best for: Patients with significant astigmatism
Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF)

Provides a continuous range of vision from far to intermediate, with less glare than multifocal lenses. Near vision is good for everyday tasks.

Best for: Patients wanting reduced glasses use with fewer visual compromises

Am I Suitable?

Cataract surgery is one of the most commonly performed procedures in the world. You may be a candidate if:

Your vision is becoming cloudy, hazy, or washed out
Glare from oncoming headlights is making night driving difficult
Colours appear faded or yellowed compared to before
Your prescription has changed significantly in recent months

Your consultant will confirm your suitability at your free consultation based on a thorough assessment of your eyes.

Understanding the Risks

Cataract surgery is the most commonly performed surgical procedure in the UK, with an exceptional safety record. As with any procedure, there are risks your surgeon will discuss with you:

  • Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) — a common, easily treatable condition with a quick laser procedure
  • Temporary inflammation or dry eye — managed with post-operative drops
  • Extremely rare complications include infection or retinal detachment — minimised by our rigorous surgical protocols
  • Your pre-operative assessment identifies any individual risk factors, allowing your surgeon to plan accordingly
"The staff made me feel so relaxed. The doctor was gentle, caring, and gave me a clear plan. I haven't looked back since my surgery."

Common Questions About Cataract Surgery

Will I need glasses after cataract surgery?

It depends on the lens implant chosen. Premium multifocal or trifocal lenses can reduce or eliminate the need for glasses entirely. Your consultant will discuss all lens options with you.

Is the surgery done under general anaesthetic?

No — cataract surgery is performed under local anaesthetic with sedation if needed. You'll be awake but comfortable, and the procedure typically takes 15-20 minutes per eye.

How soon will my vision improve?

Most patients notice clearer vision within 24 hours. Full stabilisation typically occurs over 4-6 weeks as the eye heals and adjusts to the new lens.

Can cataracts come back?

No. Once the clouded natural lens is replaced with an artificial lens, cataracts cannot return. In some cases, a thin membrane behind the lens may cloud over time, which is easily treated with a quick YAG laser procedure.

What lens options are available?

We offer monofocal lenses (clear distance vision), multifocal lenses (distance and near), and toric lenses (for astigmatism correction). Your consultant will recommend the best option for your lifestyle.

Driving 1–7 days

Light exercise 2 weeks
Swimming 4 weeks

Heavy lifting 4 weeks
Washing hair 48 hours (carefully)

Your Recovery Journey

Day 1
Immediate Improvement

Many patients notice brighter colours and clearer vision within hours. Your eye may feel slightly gritty — this is normal. Wear the protective shield at night.

Week 1
Settling In

Vision improves each day. Attend your post-op check-up. Continue antibiotic and anti-inflammatory drops as prescribed. Avoid getting water directly in your eye.

Month 1
Near Complete

Your eye has healed substantially. Most visual improvement is complete. If you need updated glasses for reading, we'll assess this at your check-up.

Month 3
Fully Healed

Your new lens is permanently settled. Final refraction assessment confirms your stable vision. If a second eye is needed, it is typically scheduled 1–4 weeks after the first.
